New Year Hike

 Greetings friends,

Happy New Year to everyone!  As we have done for the past several years, we went on our first hike of the  new year.  I simply adore the tingle of the cold winter air on my cheeks...it's both exhilarating and refreshing. We hiked along a path that we are most familiar with - but even in doing that, there is always something new to see.  Like this beautiful simple message ... "hope" ... etched in the snow.
Or the surprise of finding a tattered snowman in the middle of the woods.  We kindly gave him a nose, marveled at his beauty, and journeyed on our way.
There is something so special about the woods in winter, especially when there is snow on the ground.  It's nearly sacred...and the only sounds you hear are the crunch of the snow under your feet and the occasional call of the birds overhead.
Finding unexpected life underneath the snow - like these ferns still clutching to the warm memories of fall.  And knowing that there are residents within the woods - hiding from the strangers walking in their realm - finding only the tracks they left behind in the snow.
There is no place I'd rather be than drinking in the beauty of a new year and the many promises it offers...life, love, happiness.  Seeing glimpses of the sun doing its best to warm us as we trek through the earth that gives us so much.
Even in "death," there is life.  The skeletons of once vibrant flowers offer a fragile, ethereal beauty that often leaves me speechless.
There are so many things to be thankful for in the New Year.  And I am delighted to face the future with an open heart and a path - while still unknown - will be exciting nonetheless.
We found yet another message of inspiration in the snow.  So we left one of our own..."believe."
I'm looking forward to traveling this path together with you in 2013...

"Keep your face always toward the sunshine...the shadows will fall behind you."  Walt Whitman

Til next time,
Theresa

Happy New Year! Gorgeous photos. I love walking in the winter! Especially in/after it snows. I envy your snow! We are cold but have had no accumulating snow here on the coast since November and we haven't been able to get up to our northern home for the snows up there. Best wishes & peaceful blessings in 2013!

Beautiful post! It reminds me of the Easter hike my husband's family takes every year. We do not live in the beautiful, snowy woods, but the desert sunrise over huge mountains and rocks is great, too. Thank you for sharing your cute messages, too!
